About SALT AND SAGE PSYCHOLOGY
Our Approach
At Salt and Sage Psychology, we know therapy can sometimes feel clinical, rushed, or impersonal so we do things differently. Our work is guided by warmth, collaboration, and empathy, creating a space where you can show up exactly as you are.
We take a holistic, person-centred approach meaning we treat the whole human rather than focusing purely on diagnosis, and supporting you to build a deeper understanding of yourself. Sessions are calm, grounded, and steady —a space to slow down, reconnect, and make meaningful progress at a pace that feels safe and sustainable.
We aim to offer an inclusive, nourishing sanctuary where you can develop lifelong skills, not just short-term strategies. Our therapeutic relationships are intentional, genuine, and deeply human meaning we bring our real selves into the room and walk alongside you, not in front of you.
At Salt and Sage, we believe you can’t change the waves, but you can learn to surf them with confidence, clarity, and compassion.
Our Story
Salt and Sage Psychology began with a simple intention which was to create a space that feels as calming and grounding as the shoreline. After years in more clinical settings, I found myself craving a practice that reflected the quiet steadiness of the ocean — a place where people could slow down, feel safe, and reconnect with themselves. Even the softest waves can reshape the shore, and therapy can have the same gentle, transformative effect on our lives.
The beach has always been where I feel most centred. The rhythm of the waves, the openness of the horizon, the reminder that life constantly shifts and settles. I wanted Salt and Sage to hold that same energy — warm, steady, and gently transformative. A space for people who feel like they’ve lost their footing, or who simply need the sense of calm that the ocean brings.
My passion has always been understanding the human mind, but more than that, helping people understand themselves. There’s something powerful about watching clients recognise their own patterns, soften toward their emotions, and begin to make sense of their inner world. Much of my work is grounded in attachment theory, because it offers a compassionate lens for why we feel, behave, and relate the way we do and how we can move toward healthier, kinder ways of being.
Salt and Sage was built on connection. I believe therapy should feel like a partnership, not a prescription. I don’t stand above the work but I walk alongside you in it. Together, we explore what’s difficult, nurture what’s emerging, and build the lifelong skills that help you navigate life with steadiness and confidence.
The name reflects this philosophy. Salt brings the clarity, renewal, and calm of the coast while Sage represents wisdom, grounding, and growth. Together, they symbolise the blend of emotional understanding and gentle guidance that shapes our work.
Salt and Sage is still growing, just like the people who walk through its doors. My hope is that this continues to evolve into a warm, inclusive space where you can come home to yourself, one gentle wave at a time.

Shakayla
LEAD PSYCHOLOGIST AT SALT AND SAGE PSYCHOLOGY
Clinical Psychologist
Educational & Developmental Psychologist
BSCPYSCH (HONS 1) | MPSYCH (ED & DEV) | MAAPI
Shakayla is a psychologist with a warm, down-to-earth approach that helps clients feel genuinely comfortable and understood. She completed her Bachelor of Psychological Science with First Class Honours at the University of Queensland, followed by a Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology at QUT, and is fully endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist as well as an Educational and Developmental Psychologist.
Shakayla has experience across private practice, hospital-based adult and adolescent inpatient units, and schools, providing her with a broad perspective on supporting people through a wide range of challenges. She has a particular interest in working with young women and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation difficulties, disordered eating, and relationship or attachment concerns.
Her therapeutic style is warm, person-centred, and holistic. Shakayla believes in seeing the whole person—not just their difficulties—and creating a safe, supportive space where clients can feel at ease. She draws on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Schema Therapy.
Shakayla also provides comprehensive assessments for children (6+) and adults, including assessment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), learning disorders, as well as cognitive and emotional/behavioural functioning.
Outside the therapy room, Shakayla brings the same warmth and authenticity to her life. She enjoys being active, heading to the beach, surfing, practicing Pilates and yoga, and spending time with her family and friends. You’ll often find her with her Golden Retriever, Phoebe - her loyal sidekick, beach buddy, and unapologetic shadow.
Phoebe
CHIEF OF WELLBEING OFFICER (CWO)
Phoebe is an 11-year-old Golden Retriever with a heart full of love and an impressive résumé of joy-spreading. Much to the dismay of many clients, she has officially retired from her work as a therapy dog (trained with Therapy Dogs Australia). She decided that long naps and sunbaking were more her style.
While Phoebe no longer attends appointments, you may occasionally spot her wandering the clinic on her own schedule, usually in search of pats or a comfy patch of sunlight. She is our gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and stay grounded in the present moment.
Her favourite things include beach adventures, family time, cafe outings, stick collecting, well-deserved snoozes, and receiving as many scratches as anyone is willing to offer.
